Tour Location
Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is just off the "toe" of Italy's "boot." Its rich history is reflected in sites like the Valley of the Temples, the well-preserved ruins of 7 monumental, Doric-style Greek temples. On Sicily’s eastern edge is Mount Etna, one of Europe’s highest active volcanoes. It can take several hours to drive from one side of the island to the other. The ideal amount of time needed to see both the East and West sides of Sicily is about 3 weeks. Madrina has broken Sicily into 3 tours; East, West, and Islands.
History
Sicily, Italian Sicilia, island, southern Italy, is the largest and one of the most densely populated islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily was inhabited 10,000 years ago. The Greeks settled Sicilian towns between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE. During the 19th century the island was a major center of revolutionary movements: in 1860, as a result of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s revolt, it was liberated from the Bourbons and in the following year was incorporated into the united kingdom of Italy. In 1947 Sicily gained regional autonomy. The island is mostly mountainous, and profound volcanic activity is quite intense. The climate in Sicily is subtropical as well as Mediterranean. Sicily’s strong cultural traditions can be seen in the development of Italian lyrical poetry. You are also able to see the works of modern writers such as Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, and Leonardo Sciascia in Sicily. Several examples of folk are such as embroidery, painting, puppetry and popular religious festivals also repute Sicily’s contribution to Italian culture. Sicily has a long history that dates to ancient times. It is believed that the earliest inhabitants of the island were the Sicani people date back to 8,000 B.C.E. After that time, the control of Sicily then shifted through differing empires and people throughout the Early Middle Ages. Some of these included the Germanic Vandals, the Byzantines, Arabs, and the Normans. In 1130 C.E., the island became the Kingdom of Sicily, and it was known at the time as one of the richest states in Europe.
