The Mermaid is inspired by the legend of Parthenope, the daughter of the god of Achelous and the Muse Terpischore.  The greek legend tells us that she cast herself in the sea and drowned when her songs failed to entice Ullysses (the hero of the Odyssey.)  Her body washed ashore in Naples on the Island of Megaride where the Castle dell'Ovo is now located.  When people from the city of Cumae settled there, they worshipped her like a Goddess in the honor of unrequited love.
